British Digital Broadcasting orders set-top boxes

9th March 1998

British Digital Broadcasting PLC (BDB) has selected six leading manufacturers - Grundig, Pace, Philips, Nokia, Sony and Toshiba - to make its "plug in and play" set-top boxes. The boxes will be in shops for BDB's launch in the last quarter of this year.

Nigel Walmsley, Director of BDB, said:

"These orders mean there will be set-top boxes in the shops in time for the Christmas selling season. The support of leading TV and set-top box manufacturers is another important step for BDB."
"The arrival of these set-top boxes will herald the next step in mainstream television: more choice, with clearer pictures and better sound. By plugging the boxes into their existing televisions, viewers will be able to receive an exciting line up of channels via their existing aerials without the need for a dish or cable connection."
